Selective isolation and distribution of Sporichthya strains in soil
Article Abstract:
A selective isolation method for Sporichthya strains in soil, which uses gellan gum plus calcium chloride, is introduced. The method was applied in isolating Sporichthya strains from 466 soil samples collected in 28 countries. Sporichthya-like isolates were obtained from 21 of the 466 samples, which showed resemblance in terms of morphological characteristics. Results indicate that Sporichthya strains prefer a neutral-pH environment, since Sporichthya strains were isolated from soil samples with pH values ranging from 6.1 to 8.0. Results also reveal that Sporichthya strains are widely distributed in Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America.

Development of metal tolerance in soil bacterial communities exposed to experimentally increased metal levels
Article Abstract:
Soil bacterial communities show an increase in metal tolerance after 2 days followed by a stabilization when zinc (Zn) concentrations in the soil are increased. Tolerance remains unaffected by concentrations less than 2mmol of Zn kg (dry weight) of soil(sup -1). With Zn concentrations of 16mmol, tolerance begins after 4 months and lasts for more than one year. The addition of Cd, Cu and Ni also result in metal tolerance, which increases with prolonged soil incubation. At the end of a 28-month period, the bacterial communities show lower pH optimum and higher tolerance to lower osmotic potential.

Diversity of soil actinomycetes in Yunnan, China
Article Abstract:
The diversity of actinomycetes in Yunnan, China, is dependent on the type of soil, vegetation, and climate. There are 29 different genera of actinomycetes and almost 90% of all the actinomycetes belong to the Streptomyces genus. The greatest diversity is seen in soils from primeval forests which contain 9 genera. Secondary forests and vegetable farmlands have an average of 6 different genera. Dry and poor soils at places with cool climates have a low amount of actinomycetes and a high percentage of Streptomyces. Thermophilic actinomycetes occur up to about 3500 meters above sea level in Yunnan.
