Selective removal of DNA from dead cells of mixed bacterial communities by use of ethidium monoazide
Article Abstract:
Ethidium monoazide bromide (EMA)-PCR as a diagnostic DNA-based method combining the use of a live-dead staining dye with the speed and sensitivity of real-time PCR is described. It provided evidence that prior to denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, EMA treatment of a mature mixed-population drinking-water biofilm containing a substantial proportion of dead cells could result in community fingerprints dramatically different from those for an untreated biofilm.

Exploring nitrilase sequence space for enantioselective catalysis
Article Abstract:
Nitrilase sequence space of 137 unique nitrilases was studied for determining their enantioselectivity in catalysis, substrate specificity and stereospecificity. The enzymes can be used for the evolutionary and structural analyses and presents a toolbox for enantiospecific synthesis.

Unusual microbial xylanases from insect guts
Article Abstract:
Genomic libraries are constructed from microbial DNA from insect intestinal tracts, the insects used are termites and moths. These DNA libraries are screened for genes that are helpful in encoding proteins with xylanase activity.
