Separating nurture from nature in estimating heritability
Article Abstract:
A study demonstrates that nature, genetics and heredity, and nurture, culture and environment, can be separated without resorting to any special experimental design through the use of molecular markers. The innovation is to utilize marker data to measure the proportions of identical-by-descent (IBD) genes actually shared by siblings, and the association between the IBD value and the similarity of the siblings phenotype can then be used to calculate a covariance and provide an unbiased heritability estimate.

A multivariate model for ordinal trait analysis
Article Abstract:
A multivariate model is developed for ordinal trait analysis and an EM algorithm for parameter estimation is implemented as well as a method for calculating the variance-covariance matrix of the estimated parameters is proposed. It is seen that the EM equations are extremely similar to formulae seen in standard linear model analysis but has several advantages and application of the method to QTL mapping for ordinal traits is demonstrated using a simulated baclcross (BC) population.

A penalized maximum likelihood method for estimating epistatic effects of QTL
Article Abstract:
A penalized maximum likelihood method, which adopts penalty that depends on the values of the parameters for estimating the epistatic effects of QTL, is developed. It is found that this new method can handle a model with a number of effects 15 times larger than the sample size.
