Stable-nitrogen isotope enrichment in avian tissues due to fasting and nutritional stress: implications for isotopic analyses of diet
Article Abstract:
Arctic-nesting female Ross' Geese tissues were examined prior to and after fasting during egg laying and incubation to determine the validity of the hypothesis that sigma15N values increase in bird tissues as a result of nutritional stress. Results revealed substantial reductions in body, pectoral muscle, liver and abdominal fat mass from arrival through incubation. Compared to geese taken prior to clutch initiation, post-incubating geese showed higher sigma15N values were observed in the pectoral muscle and liver. A tissue sigma15N enrichment mechanism resulting from lower nutrient intake was proposed.

Turnover of 13C in tissues
Article Abstract:
Carbon turnover rate is directly proportional to the metabolic rate of tissues. Quail liver tissues have the fastest turnover of dietary carbon, therefore isotopic analyses of this tissue provide very short-term dietary information. Next to liver is blood, then muscle, and bone collagen having the slowest turnover. Stable isotope values of crow feathers reflected diet during periods of growth. Isotopic assays can be used to determine contributions of dietary sources to the composition of feathers and eggs. Isotopic assays provide lower bounds to stable isotope turnover rates.

Factors influencing diet-tissue fractionation
Article Abstract:
Diet-tissue isotopic fractionation factors describe how stable-isotope ratios in consumer tissues are related to dietary values. Fractionation values for juvenile birds are influenced by diets, species, tissue types and nutritional stress. Age in adult falcons does not affect isotopic fractionation values. Isotopic fractionation values established previously for mammals are not applicable to avian fractionation values, except values between diet and collagen. Bird feeding exclusively on animal protein show similar nitrogen isotopic fractionation values for tissues.
