Straw compost and bioremediated soil as inocula for the bioremediation of chlorophenol-contaminated soil
Article Abstract:
The feasibility of using straw compost and remediated soil as inocula for bioremediation of pentachlorophenol (PCP)-contaminated soil is studied under field-simulating conditions. Results indicate that straw compost and remediated soil can effectively mineralized PCP with trace amounts of chloroanisoles as the only biotransformation products. The use of these inoculants does not pose any harmful side reactions.

Determination of the biomasses of small bacteria at low concentrations in a mixture of species with forward light scatter measurements by flow cytometry
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to show that the biomass of small bacteria at low concentrations in a mixture can be obtained from measurements of forward light scatter intensity using flow cytometry. Samples were prepared with filtered formaldehyde and stored at 5 degrees C in the dark. Flow cytometry was then carried out using an Ortho Cytofluorograf IIS supporting a flat-sided quartz flow cell.

Interactions between marine bacteria and dissolved-phase and beached hydrocarbons after the Exxon Valdez oil spill
Article Abstract:
The changes in the properties of indigenous marine bacteria in Resurrection Bay in response to the Exxon Valdex oil spill disaster was discussed. The microbial biomass, cell size, DNA content and the rates of hyrocarbon oxidation were determined from different water column and beach sediment samples. The results were used to analyse and design an effective bioremediation method.
