The evolution of maladaptation
Article Abstract:
The evolution of maladaptation, defined in terms of deviation from adaptive peaks, and a research project dealing with it are discussed in this review article. Understanding of phenotypic variation depends on analysis of the scope and usual causes of maladaptation. Degrees of maladpatation are determined by genetic architecture and relationship of rates of selective environmental change and the nature/extent of genetic responses to selection.

Stress and transposable elements: co-evolution or useful parasites?
Article Abstract:
How stress induces activity of transposable elements (TEs) is discussed in this short review article. Current research is centered on the existence of promoters or fixation sites of transcription activators in the untranslated regions of the TEs with the presence of promoters or fixation sites of transcription activators in the untranslated regions of TEs giving rise to hypotheses. The untranslated regions in question are those similar to those in regulatory regions of host defense genes. TEs were once described as parasitic sequences, using host machinery for amplification.

A novel method for estimating heritability using molecular markers
Article Abstract:
A novel method for estimating heritability using molecular markers is discussed with salmon as an example. Two single-locus VNTR DNA fingerprint markers in conjunction with a maximum likelihood method were used to look at relatedness in pairs in a captive population of Pacific chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. The method allows for estimating heritability in wild, long-lived species not easy to manipulate for study in controlled breeding situations.
