Structure of the Clostridium stercorarium gene celY encoding the exo-1,4-beta-glucanase Avicelase II
Article Abstract:
The deduced amino acid sequence of the Clostridium stercorarium celY gene was analyzed in a purified sample acquired from a recombinant Escherichia coli strain. Polymerase chain reaction analysis of the celY gene which encodes the exp-1,4-beta-glucanase Avicelase II of Clostridium sterorarium indicated the presence of a mature CelY polypeptide with a molecular mass of 97 kDa. Furthermore, the deduced amino acid sequence of the CelY protein was similar to the cellulase family L of microbial enzymes such as Avicelase II.

Genes encoding two different Beta-glucosidases of Thermoanaerobacter brockii are clustered in a common operon
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on two Thermoanaerobacter brokii genes that can cleave 4-nitrophenyl Beta-D-glucosides. cglT encodes a cellodextrin-cleaving Beta glucosidase and xglS encodes a xylo-Beta-glucosidase. CglT and Xgls enzymes were found to be overexpressed in Escherichia coli and may be identified through activity staining and protein gel electrophoresis. The CglT enzyme acted on galactosides, fucosides and glucosides while XglS cleaved Beta-xylosides and Beta-glucosides.

Isolation and properties of acetate kinase- and phosphotransacetylase-negative mutants of Thermoanaerobacter thermohydrosulfuricus
Article Abstract:
Thermoanaerobacter thermohydrosulfuricus mutants grown on glucose with a suppressed acetate pathway produce L-lactate as the main fermentation product. The activity of the genes producing acetate kinase and phosphotransacetylase show a negative correlation with acetate. The amount of acetate formation is significantly more than the wild-type bacteria. The mutants lack phosphotransacetylase and/or acetate kinase. The mutants produce low amounts of acetate and ethanol.
