Succession and convergence of biofilm communities in fixed-film reactors treating aromatic hydrocarbons in groundwater
Article Abstract:
Studies in three fluidized bed reactors (FBR) reveal that the indigenous groundwater populations are more competitive than the inoculated strains, in scavenging low toluene concentrations, indicating a succession of dominant community types. Out of the three inoculated toluene-degrading strains, Pseudomonas putida PaW1, Burkholderia cepacia G4, and B. pickettii PKO1, PaW1 outcompetes the other two strains. Convergence of populations is found in the seeded and the natural groundwater-colonized-communities. Populations in all reactors converge to the same climax community.

Gene probe analysis of soil microbial populations selected by amendment with2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid
Article Abstract:
The utilization of gene probes in monitoring the selection response of an indigenous soil microbial community which was introduced to a new substrate is discussed. Herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid were repeatedly added to the sample soil types. Quantitative hybridization analyses and most-probable-number enumeration were used to monitor the sample population before and after treatments. The response of native soil communities to the addition of a growth substrate was successfully monitored by the technique.

High levels of endemicity of 3-chlorobenzoate-degrading soil bacteria
Article Abstract:
Data genetic diversity and geographic origins of 3-chlorobenzoate-degrading soil bacteria based on repetitive extragenic palindromic fingerprinting and amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis are presented. Diversity at the subspecies level can be derived from repetitive extragenic palindromic fingerprinting while amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis reveal related taxa at the generic level. The genetic diversity and genotypic endemicity of these bacteria are discussed.
