Sulfate-reducing bacteria and their activities in cyanobacterial mats of Solar Lake (Sinai, Egypt)
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the sulfate-reducing bacteria within the surface layer of the hypersaline cyanobacterial mat of Solar Lake in Sinai, Egypt, using a combination of molecular, microbiological and biogeochemical methods. The most conspicuous adaptations of Solar Lake sulfate-reducing bacteria to the mat matrix and to diurnal oxygen stress were filamentous morphology, facultative aerobic respiration, diurnal migration, motility and aggregate formation. Results also revealed that CO2 from sulfate reduction in the upper 5mm accounted for 7% to 8% of the total photosynthetic CO2 demand of the mat.

Molecular identification of bacteria from a coculture by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of 16S ribosomal DNA fragments as a tool for isolation in pure cultures
Article Abstract:
The denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of 16S ribosomal DNA is helpful for the molecular identification of the bacterial composition of a coculture which is able to reduce sulfate. This molecular information is a useful tool for isolating the components of the coculture in a pure culture. The presence of two different 16S ribosomal DNA bands reveal the existence of two separate bacterial strains. The two bands are produced by a Desulfovibrio strain and a Arcobacter strain.
