Tellurite resistance and reduction by obligately aerobic photosynthetic bacteria
Article Abstract:
The obligately aerobic photosynthetic bacteria of the genera Erythromicrobium, Erythrobacter and Roseococcus show a constitutive high-level resistance (HLR) to tellurite compounds and metallic tellurium crystals. R. thiosulfatophilus and Erythromicrobium ezovicum grown on carbon sources show HLR without any tellurium reduction. This shows that tellurite reduction is unnecessary for tellurite resistance. The growth of the bacteria with tellurite leads to black coloration due to tellurium reduction and an increase in intracellular accumulation of tellurium.

Anaerobic respiration on tellurate and other metalloids in bacteria from hydrothermal vent fields in the eastern Pacific Ocean
Article Abstract:
The discovery of anaerobic respiration on tellurate by bacteria isolated from the eastern Pacific Ocean hydrothermal vent worms is reported. Enumeration of the anaerobic metalloid-resistant microbial community associated with hydrothermal vent animals indicates resistance of a greater proportion of the bacterial community associated with certain vent fauna and reduction of metalloids anaerobically than aerobically, suggesting that anaerobic metalloid respiration could be an important process in bacteria that are symbiotic with vent fauna.
