Telomeres and telomerase: a simple picture becomes complex
Article Abstract:
Genetic studies on yeast have provided new discoveries about telomeres, the specialized structures at the chromosomal termini, and telomerase, a DNA polymerase which regulates telomere length. Recently, polymerase chain reaction-based assay and cloning offered ways to measure telomerase activity based on telomere shortening or lengthening. The factors affecting telomerase regulation and the applications of telomerase assays to clinical research are discussed.

When size does not matter: Pairing sites during meiosis
Article Abstract:
The pairing of homologous chromosomes during meiosis is maintained by specialized sites along DNA. The identification of proteins that localize to the pairing sites in Drosophila males and Caenorhabditis elegans suggests there is a promising future in the quest to understand the mechanisms for recombination-independent pairing and sybaptonemal complex.
