The Bacillus subtilis clpC operon encodes DNA repair and competence proteins
Article Abstract:
Potential functions of the orf5 and orf6 gene products encoded by the clpC operon were investigated. The product of orf5 are similar to the product of the Escherichia coli sms gene. The orf6 is of limited similarity with the Bacillus subtilis comEA gene product and to the UvrC DNA repair excinuclease. Mutations on orf5 or orf6 produce strains with decreased UV-irradiation resistance in the stationary phase. Both proteins were suggested to have a role in transformation and DNA repair.

A 23 911 bp region of the Bacillus subtilis genome comprising genes located upstream and downstream of the lev operon
Article Abstract:
A 23 911 bp long chromosomal DNA fragment located around 233 degrees on the Bacillus subtilis genetic map was cloned and sequenced. Generated sequencing data and homology search results determined the primary structure of the region. Putative genes amino acid permease, a chitosanase, two different alcohol hydrogenases, a protein of LysR family, a protein related to the MerR transcriptional regulator and genes coding for nine more inferred proteins were the components of the region.

Lysine-induced premature transcription termination in the lysC operon of Bacillus subtilis
Article Abstract:
Lysine depresses expression of lysC operon of Bacillus subtilis by stimulating premature termination of transcription at rho-independent terminator that ends at nucleotide 459. The lysC operon is also controled by starvation for lysine or by aecA cis-acting mutations. Lysine has no effect on the amount of total lysC RNA. Instead, it promotes the replacement of full-length mRNA with truncated 0.27 kb RNA species. However, lysine's mechanism of transcription attenuation is unclear.
