Erp, an extracellular protein family specific to mycobacteria
Article Abstract:
Occurrence of the extracellular exported repeated protein, Erp, of mycobacteria is universal in that it is found in all of the mycobacterial species tested. The Erp contains three domains, a highly conseved amino-terminal consisting of signal sequence, a central variable region, and a concerved proline and alanine containing carboxy-terminus.

The Mycobacterium tuberculosis purine biosynthetic pathway: isolation and characterization of the purC and purL genes
Article Abstract:
Genes from the Mycobacterium tuberculosis purine biosynthetic pathway were determined by utilizing purine auxotrophic mutants of Mycobacterium smegmatis. Two methods were used in parallel. In the first method, the M. smegmatics purine auxotrophs were complemented utilizing a M. tuberculosis H37Rv shuttle cosmid library. In the second method, specific probes corresponding to the regions next to the insertion sites of Tn611 in the M. smegmatis genome were employed to screen homologous DNA fragments. Findings indicated high similarities with purC and purL genes form other bacterial and fungal sources.

A novel polymorphic genetic locus in members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to characterize the counterpart of the Mycobacterium paratuberculosis P(sub AN)-IS900 genetic region in members of the M. tuberculosis complex and to determine the nature of the RFLP detected by P(sub AN). The equivalent M. tuberculosis sequence was derived through the M. tuberculosis genome sequencing project and compared. Results demonstrate that the observed RFLP that distinguished a wild-type M. bovis strain from M. tuberculosis and M. bovis BCG was produced by a 2.4 kb fragment that was present in M. tuberculosis and M. bovis BCG but absent in many M. bovis strains.
