The RNA silencing endonuclease argonaute 2 mediates specific antiviral immunity in Drosophila melanogaster
Article Abstract:
The role of the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) in response to viral infection in Drosophila melanogaster is investigated to test whether RNA interference (RNAi) plays a central or an auxiliary role in antiviral defense. The suppressor of RNAi binds long double-stranded RNA and inhibits Dicer-2-mediated processing of dsRNA into siRNA but does not bind short siRNAs or disrupt the microRNA indicating that RNAi is a major antiviral immune defense mechanism in Drosophila.2985

Distinct functions of homeodomain-containing and homeodomain-less isoforms encoded by homothorax
Article Abstract:
The alternative splicing of homothorax (hth) is shown, which generates two types of protein isoforms, the first that contains a DNA-containing homoeodomain (HthFL) and the other, that does not contain a homoedomain (HDless). It is further demonstrated that the mouse ortholog of hth, Meis1, also encodes a HDless isoform, suggesting that homoedomain-less variant of this gene family are evolutionarily ancient.

Lozenge directly activates Argos and klumpfuss to regulate programmed cell death
Article Abstract:
Lozenge (Lz)-binding sites in introns of argos (aos) and klumpfuss (klu) are identified to demonstrate that these genes are directly activated targets of Lz. These results provide novel insights into the control of programmed cell death (PCD) by Lz during drosophila eye development.
