The influence of local DNA sequence and DNA repair background on the mutational specificity of 1-nitroso-8-nitropyrene in Escherichia coli: inferences for mutagenic mechanisms
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the mutational specificity of 1-nitroso-8-nitropyrene (1,8-NONP) in the lacI gene of Escherichia coli strains. The strains varied across nucleotide excision repair and MucA/B-mediated error-prone translesion synthesis. Varied mutation classes were recovered whose conditions were caused by 1,8NONP treatment. Results show that DNA sequence context of the adduct and DNA cell repair background condition 1,8NONP mutational specificity.

The Cs sec mutants of Eschericia coli reflect the cold sensitivity of protein export itself
Article Abstract:
The cold-sensitive phase in protein-export pathway of Eschericia coli was elucidated. Cs sec mutations were shown to affect the Sec proteins SecD, SecE, SecF and SecY resulting in proteins that inactivate at low temperatures. However, the results showed that the protein lability arises from the cold sensitivity of the protein export process. Thus, the mutants can be characterized based on the effect of cold on the protein export.

Evidence for conservative (two-progeny) DNA double-strand break repair
Article Abstract:
Genetic experiments with two isogenic plasmids marked differentially with restriction polymorphism confirm the existence of the conservative (two-progeny) double-strand break repair mechanism in the Escherichia coli Rec E and lambda Red pathways. These experiments, however do not indicate the absence of nonconservative (one-progeny) recombination. Double-strand break repair models are supported by these experimental data.
