The ldh phylogeny for environmental isolates of Lactococcus lactis is consistent with rRNA genotypes but not with phenotypes
Article Abstract:
Environmental isolates of Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) having the potential as cheddar cheese starters are restricted to strains that are L.lactis subspecies (subsp) cremoris by taxonomic criteria. Strains that belong to L.lactis subsp, cremoris are potentially suited for the commercial production of cheddar cheese. Identical evolutionary relationships are derived from ldh sequences and subsp-specific binding. However, groups defined according to these chromosomal traits are unrelated to arginine deamination, carbon substrate utilization or bacteria sensitivity.

Screening of a fosmid library of marine environmental genomic DNA fragments reveal four clones related to members of the order Planctomycetales
Article Abstract:
A Southern blot experiment was conducted to confirm the presence of Planctomycetales 16S rRNA genes in a fosmid library with inserts having approximately 40 kb of marine bacterial DNA. The universal primer 519F and a Planctomycetales-specific primer were used in carrying out a polymerase chain reaction study of the 16S rRNA genes. Results show that four clones have the 16S rRNA genes, three of them belong to the Pirellula group, while the fourth is from the Planctomyces group.

Immunochemical detection and isolation of DNA from metabolically active bacteria
Article Abstract:
The DNA of bacteria with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) has been isolated by using a technique borrowed from immunocytochemistry. An immunocytochemical protocol has also been developed to visualize BrdU-labeled microbial cells. The use of the technique will allow microbial cells with BrdU with newly-synthesized DNA can be quantified and the properties of the growing cells can be identified to the composition of the microbial community as a whole.
