The status of North American migrants in Central Amazonian Brazil
Article Abstract:
Studies were conducted on 45 species of North American migrants in Amazonian Brazil to review existing records on the species' dates of migration, maximum numbers and new distribution patterns. Several species, such as the Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea), the Eastern Wood Pewee (Contopus virens) and various shorebirds, found only in the coastal regions of South America, were observed in Amazonia for the first time. Passerines such as the Alder Flycatcher (Empidonax alnorum) and the Bank Swallow (Riparia riparia) wintered in Amazonia while shorebirds such as the Lesser Golden Plover (Pluvialis dominica) and the White-rumped Sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis) passed Amazonia on their way to southern winter grounds.

Is the poo-uli a hawaiian honeycreeper (Drepanidinae)?
Article Abstract:
The Poo-uli (Melamprosops phaeosoma) is a recently discovered Hawaiian native bird. It is placed under the Drepanidinae family, but its inclusion is being contested. The monophyletic Drepanidinae has two certain synapomorphies: the distinct Drepanidine odor and tongue morphology. M. phaeosoma lacks both synamorphies. Furthermore, Drepanidines lack predator-response behaviors, but M. phaeosoma exhibits them. Drepanidine species fall into three large vocal groupings, but M. phaeosoma does not fit into any of the three. The plumage color and pattern of M. phaeosoma is different from the Drepanidines.
