The u-boot mutation identifies a Hedgehog-regulated myogenic switch for fiber-type diversification in the zebrafish embryo
Article Abstract:
The u-boot mutation has been found to identify a Hedgehog-regulated myogenic switch for fiber-type diversification in the zebrafish embryo. Findings of study give new insight into the genetic control of slow versus fast fiber differentiation and specification. Dedicated developmental pathways elaboration of distinct elements of embryonic muscle pattern seem to exist in vertebrates.

Hedgehog signaling in animal development: paradigms and principles
Article Abstract:
The authors review publications on the Hedgehog family of intercellular signaling proteins. The topics of interest include mediated by Hedgehog local interactions in the embryonic ectoderm of Drosophila, long-range signaling in Drosophila imaging discs, Hedgehog reception and control of Hh secretion and distribution.

Switching on the notochord
Article Abstract:
The stage has been set for significant advances in understanding relative to the notochord, its differentiation and the molecular mechanisms that relate to its structure/function. Up until the H. Takahashi group used embryos of the ascidian, a primitive chordate, to identify a large number of notochord-specific genes by subtractive cloning, information was lacking, but the efficacy of the Takahashi approach is remarkable and progress has begun.
