A gene mutation called LRP5 (it codes for LDL receptor-related protein 5) is responsible for abnormally high bone densities in human beings. Scientists have linked LRP5 to the Wnt signaling pathway, a family of molecules that are important for growth and development, and have realized that it is vital for the regulation of body mass, making it a target for developing treatments for osteoporosis and other skeletal disorders.

Lyndon Mitnaul
Article Abstract:
Lyndon Mitnaul, the son of an African-American father and a Japanese mother and the youngest of seven children, did his PhD in biological chemistry from Pennsylvania State University. He is a research fellow in the division of cardiovascular diseases at Merck Research Laboratories and is currently involved in identifying new targets for treating atherosclerosis, using silencing RNA as an ultrahigh throughput search tool.

Dog chases whale scat
Article Abstract:
Sam Weser, director of the Center for Conservation Biology at the University of Washington, Seattle has began employing detection dog to track the scat and expects to distinguish the factors that could be harming the whales. He believes that by studying their scat, he could retrieve information about their diet and nutritional health.
