Toxin-producing ability among Bacillus spp. outside the Bacillus cereus group
Article Abstract:
A total of 333 Bacillus strains from various sources related to foods are examined for cytotoxicity and production of putative emetic toxins using a cytotoxicity assay of Vero cells, the boar spermatozoa motility assay and a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method. The analysis shows that the toxin-producing Bacillus spp. seems to be rare among isolates from water, food and food environments and none of the toxins detected are similar to the B. cereus enterotoxins or to cereulide.

Differentiation of spores of Bacillus subtilis grown in different media by elemental characterization using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry
Article Abstract:
The use of time-of-slight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) in a forensics application is demonstrated to distinguish Bacillus subtilis spores grown in various media based on the elemental signatures of the spores. Triplicate cultures grown in each four different media are analyzed to obtain TOF-SIMS signatures comprised of 16 elemental intensities.

Novel method for detection of butanolides in Streptomyces coelicolor culture broth, using a His-tagged receptor (ScbR) and mass spectrometry
Article Abstract:
A successful model system for the identification of SCB1 from Streptomyces coelicolor is reported. Using S. coelicolor as a model system, SCB1 was detected from only 100 ml of the culture broth after solvent extraction.
