Transgenic mice that express a myelin basic protein-specific T cell receptor develop spontaneous autoimmunity
Article Abstract:
Transgenic mice expressing a T-cell receptor specific for the dominant myelin basic protein (MBP) epitope were generated. This model system was used to investigate the mechanisms for maintaining tolerance to MBP and to identify environmental influences contributing to autoimmunity. The results showed that the mice could develop allergic encephalomyelitis upon immunization with MBP and adjuvant plus pertussis toxin and with pertussis toxin alone. This model system will be useful in further investigations on the genetic and environmental components of autoimmune diseases.

Ku-86-deficient mice exhibit severe combined immunodeficiency and defective processing of V(D)J recombination intermediates
Article Abstract:
The heterodimeric DNA end binding complex Ku is composed of 70 and 86 kDa subunits. A study shows that mice deficient in Ku86 are defective in forming coding joints, an indication that Ku86 may be essential for normal V(D)J recombination in vivo. Moreover, Ku-86-deficient mice are also defective for signal joint formation. DNA-protein complexes containing broken ends may have to be remodeled or disassembled using Ku86 to make them suitable for further joining and processing.

TWEAK attenuates the transition from innate to adaptive immunity
Article Abstract:
Host defense against infection requires an integrated function of the innate and adaptive immune system that critically affects the nature of the adaptive response. Studies show that TWEAK suppresses production of excess interferon and interleukin thus curtailing the innate response and its transition to adaptive immunity.
