Use of the API rapid NFT system for identifying nonfermentative and fermentative marine bacteria
Article Abstract:
The accuracy of APT Analab Product's Rapid NFT system used for identification of marine bacteria was evaluated. Twentysix strains of heterotrophic bacteria were characterized and identified using the Rapid NFT system protocol. The manufacturer's protocol was also modified by substituting the provided AUX medium with phenol with and without sterile mineral oil overlay. Using the Rapid NFT system, only two and five were identified correctly to the genus and species level, respectively. Less accurate results were obtained from the modified system protocol.

Variations in rRNA content of marine Vibrio spp. during starvation-survival and recovery
Article Abstract:
Two phylogenetically related strain of copioytrophic marine bacteria, Vibrio furnissii and V. alginolyticus, were studied to determine the differences in ribosome content during the period of nutrient deprivation and subsequent enrichment following starvation. The methodology involved nutrient depletion either by stationary-phase or nutritional shift-down treatments and the degree of retention of the original rRNA content was measure. Results showed that response to starvation were species dependent and was determined by the nutrient-depletion pattern.

Measurement of rRNA variations in natural communities of microorganisms on the Southeastern US continental shelf
Article Abstract:
Heterotrophic communities in natural seawater cultures varied with selected substrates, showing that Synechococcus populations were isolated from the water column by differential filtration. The total cellular rRNA content of the target populations were tested by probing RNA purified from these samples with an oligonucleotide complementing a universally conserved region in the eubacterial 16S rRNA. This showed that heterotrophic bacteria responded to the addition of glucose and trace nutrients after a 6-hour lag period.
