Use of vaginal tampons in sewer surveys for non-01 Vibrio cholerae
Article Abstract:
Vaginal tampons to be a practical alternative to Moore swabs in order to isolate Vvibrio cholerae from sewage and laboratory examinations indicated improved isolation of Vibrio cholerae with the use of 12- or 18-h enrichments in alkaline peptone water, as compared to 6-h enrichments when cultures were incubated at ambient temperatures. The study area was a lower-economic class neighborhood in northern Jakarta, Indonesia covering roughly 50 square kilometers. The first survey was during the rainy season when a swab-tampon pair was used and the second and third during the dry reason when only tampons were used.

Vibrio cholerae O1 strain TSI-4 produces the exopolysaccharide materials that determine colony morphology, stress resistance, and biofilm formation
Article Abstract:
The differences between the rugose and translucent forms of Vibrio cholerae O1 strain TSI-4 were examined. The rugose form of the strain revealed thick, electron-dense exopolysaccharide materials surrounding polycationic ferritin-stained cells, while the ferritin-stained material was absent around the translucent form. Rugose strains acquired resistance to osmotic and oxidative stress. The exopolysaccharide material on the surface of the rugose strain promoted biofilm formation and resistance to the effects of stressing agents.

The mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin of Vibrio cholerae promotes adherence to zooplankton
Article Abstract:
The mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin on the surface of Vibrio cholerae strains appears to be involved in promoting adherence to plankton. Attachment to plankton increases the growth and survival of the bacterium, thus contributing to its persistence in water.
