Use of filamentous cyanobacteria for biodegradation of organic pollutants
Article Abstract:
Examination of various cyanobacteria for their ability to degrade organic pollutants reveals that two filamentous cyanobacteria exhibit natural ability to degrade highly chlorinated aliphatic pesticide, lindane. Genetic engineering helps increase the ability of cyanobacteria to degrade organic pollutants. Modification of these strains by genetic engineering induces the ability of these strains to degrade another chlorinated pollutant, 4-chlorobenzoate.

Changes in bacterial and eukaryotic community structure after mass lysis of filamentous cyanobacteria associated with viruses
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the changes in bacterial and eukaryotic community structure after mass lysis of filamentous cyanobacteria associated with viruses. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis was used to determine whether viruses could structure the microbial community through an analysis of 16S and 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) fragments. Results provide strong evidence for the hypothesis that viruses can structure microbial communities.

Metabolism of diethyl ether and cometabolism of methyl tert-butyl ether by a filamentous fungus, a Graphium sp
Article Abstract:
The biodegradation of diethyl ether (DEE) and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) by filamentous fungus Graphium sp. is studied. Results show that DEE is used as a source of energy for growth but MTBE is used only in a cometablic reaction. The cytochrome P-450 enzyme is responsible for catalyzing the initial oxidation of DEE, MTBE and the gaseous n-alkanes.
