Utilization of carbon substrates, electrophoretic enzyme patterns, and symbiotic performance of plasmid-cured clover rhizobia
Article Abstract:
Plasmid-cured strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifoli were obtained and characterized. The plasmids influenced the utilization of various carbon compounds, motility, lipopolysaccharide production, ability to synthesize different enzymes and nitrate utilization of the cured derivatives. Curing of cryptic plasmids also influenced the nodulation competitiveness of R. leguminosarum bv. trifoli.

Rhizobial 16S rRNA and dnaK genes: Mosaicism and the uncertain phylogenetic placement of Rhizobium galegae
Article Abstract:
The results of a phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA and dnaK genes of 12 agriculturally important species in the order Rhizobiales are described. The results provide a reasonable explanation for the weak statistical support often associated with the phylogenetic placemen of Rhizobium galegae and they also show an important drawback in the use of partial sequences for species identification.

Transformation of Rhizobia with broad-host-range plasmids by using a freeze-thaw method
Article Abstract:
A modified freeze-thaw method that was used to transform several species of rhizobia with broad-host-range plasmids of different replicons is presented. The transformants carry binary vectors, which could be engineered to carry genes of interest, offering the opportunity to modulate the rhizobium-plant interaction in a novel way.
