Utilization of transferrin and salmon serum as sources of iron by typical and atypical strains of Aeromonas salmonicida
Article Abstract:
Typical and atypical strains of Aeromonas salmonicida are capable of utilizing heat-inactivated salmon serum for growth in addition to transferrin- (Tf) and lactoferrin-bound iron from bovines and humans. However, the mechanisms of degradation of the non-heme protein-bound sources of iron are different in the two strains. The typical strains use Tf through a siderophore-mediated pathway and degrade Tf with the extracellular serine protease. The atypical strains use a siderophore-independent mechanism and metabolize Tf via the extracellular metalloprotease.

Superoxide dismutase and catalase in Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida and their roles in resistance to reactive oxygen species
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze a periplasmic superoxide dismutase and a cytoplasmic catalase in Photobacterium damselae. Catalase activity was observed on non-denaturing acrylamide gels while several techniques were examined to determine periplasmic extracts supporting low cytoplasmic contamination. Results indicated that the catalase was constitutively expressed while the superoxide dismutase was repressed under low oxygen environments.

Invasion of fish epithelial cells by Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida: evidence for receptor specificity, and effect of capsule and serum
Article Abstract:
Results show that Photobacterium damselae invades fish epithelial cells by receptor-mediated internalization of the engulfed bacteria. Data also show that sea bass serum slightly reduced invasion capability of the bacteria.
