Validity and normative data for thirty-second chair stand test in elderly community-dwelling Hong Kong Chinese
Article Abstract:
A sample of elderly Hong Kong Chinese cohorts who undertook a 30-sec chair stand test (30CST) to complete isometric measures of maximal hip flexion and knee extension plus a habitual physical activity is presented. Despite the limitations of the collection techniques, the results suggest that the 30CST is likely to be a moderately weak measure of lower body strength in the elderly, although it adequately discriminates between groups of different age and activity levels.

Effects of progressive strength training on the performance of the Functional Reach Test and the Timed Get-Up-and-Go Test in an elderly population from the rural north of Portugal
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the effect of an intensity progressive strength training program on the performance of two tests related to fall risk, the Functional Reach Test (FRT) and the Timed Get-Up-and-Go Test (TUG). Results demonstrated that progressive strength training led directly to substantial gains in maximal strength and large increases in TUG and FRT performance after the intervention program period were also seen.

A comparison of physical activity levels in two contrasting elderly populations in Thailand
Article Abstract:
The authors investigate physical activity patterns of the elderly in developing countries transitioning toward Western-style patterns of activity, using Thailand as an example. A residential home community and a rural community are compared, finding that subjects from the rural community were leaner and lighter than those in the residential home, due to more physically active lifestyles.
