Zooxanthellae harvested by ciliates associated with brown band syndrome of corals remain photosynthetically competent
Article Abstract:
The microscale oxygen measurements and variable chlorophyll a fluorescence analysis are used show that the zooxanthellae within the ciliates are photosynthetically competent and are not compromised during the progression of the brown band zone. The observations of photosynthetically active intracellular zooxanthellae in the ciliates has indicated that the latter could benefit from photosynthates produced by ingested zooxanthellae and from photosynthetic oxygen production that alleviates diffusion limitation of oxic respiration in the densely populated brown band tissue.

A nitrite microsensor for profiling environmental biofilms
Article Abstract:
A nitrite microsensor with a submicromolar detection limit was constructed with a modified procedure from a highly-selective liquid ion-exchanger. The highly selective ion-exchanging membrane (LIX) microsensors exhibited a log linear response to a nitrite concentration of one micromolar in a phosphate buffer. The microsensors also exhibited increased tip diameter with protein coating and shielding. Furthermore, the nitrite microsensor is useful for the quantitative analysis of nitrite concentrations in nitrifying and denitrifying biofilms.

Microsensor measurements of sulfate reduction and sulfate oxidation in compact microbial communities of aerobic biofilms
Article Abstract:
The microzonation of oxygen respiration, sulfide oxidation and sulfate reduction in an aerobic biofilm was identified with the use of microsensors that measured the concentration of various substrates. Results show that oxygen respiration occurs in the upper 0.2 to 0.4 mm of the biofilm while sulfide oxication occurs in the bottom of this oxygen respiration zone. Sulfate reduction, on the other hand, occurs in the lower anoxic zones. The rates of these reactions were analyzed using a one-dimensional diffusion model.
