mtDNA history of the Cayapa Amerinds of Ecuador: detection of additional founding lineages for the Native American populations
Article Abstract:
The mtDNA history of the Cayapa Amerinds of Ecuador is discussed in relation efforts to detect of additional founding lineages for the Native American populations through use of linguistics, archaeology and the study of genetic relationships. Haplotype and nucleotide diversity seen in the Cayapa seem to differ from those seen in other Chibchan groups while matching those calculated by South American populations that belong to a number of linguistic stocks.

Inheritance of mitochondrial DNA recombinants in double-heteroplasmic families: Potential implications for phylogenetic analysis
Article Abstract:
Two families, each harboring two inherited heteroplasmic mtDNA mutations are investigated to determine whether recombinant mtDNA molecules can be transmitted through the germ line. Findings suggest that recombinant mtDNA molecules can be transmitted through the germ line and this feature explains the presence of certain allelic combinations in maternal lineages that cannot be inferred from a plain sequential order of mutational events.
