xyIUW, two genes at the start of the upper pathway operon of TOL plasmid pW0, appear to play no essential part in determining its catabolic phenotype
Article Abstract:
The upper pathway operon for the catabolism of toluene and some alkyltoluenes to benzoates and alkylbenzoates in the TOL plasmid pWW0 was found to contain two open reading frames designated xyIUW:xyIU and xyIW which are located between the start of transcription and the xylC gene. The former encodes a protein of 131 amino acid residues which did not match any protein in the database while the latter encodes a protein of 348 residues that was found to be homologous to other Zn-containing alcohol dehydrogenases. Functional analysis of the two genes revealed that they play no significant role in the determination of the catabolic phenotype of the plasmid pWW0.

Production of hybrid anthracycline antibiotics by heterologous expression of Streptomyces nogalater nogalamycin biosynthesis genes
Article Abstract:
A cluster of anthracycline biosynthetic genes from Streptomyces nogalater was cloned and expressed in Streptomyces lividans and in Streptomyces galilaeus. This caused the production of a novel compound, which was derived from nogalonic acid methyl ester, when introduced into S. lividans. Direct complementation of the S. galilaeus anthracycline-non-producing mutant with the plasmid pSY15 successfully produced 'hybrid' anthracyclines. The cloning of the nogalamycin gene cluster raises the possibility of producing a series of novel anthracyclines that may be used as cytostatic drugs.

Elucidation of anthracyclinone biosynthesis by stepwise cloning of genes for anthracyclines from three different streptomyces spp
Article Abstract:
Results demonstrate a step-by-step single gene cloning in the anthracyclinone expression construct in the order predicted by the proposed biosynthetic pathway of the antibiotic using Streptomyces lividans host.
