3 companies and 3 angles on changing small to big
Article Abstract:
Avici Systems Inc., Juniper Networks Inc., and Nexabit Networks Inc. have each chosen different strategies to develop their businesses. All are in the Internet switch making industry. Lucent Technologies has acquired Nexabit for $900 mil. Nexabit is in the final stages of bringing its technology to market. Lucent can shape that process to fit the resulting product into its lineup, while Nexabit will benefit from Lucent's sales and support services. Juniper is successfully selling its products through its own channels. So its management felt it was far enough along to go public. The subsequent offering valued Juniper at $4.5 bil with shares selling as high as $98.875. Avici is somewhere between Nexabit and Juniper in its growth. Investment bankers are considering taking the company public. Its management felt that breaking from Nortel would help it with an IPO.
