A Monk Swimming: A Memoir
Article Abstract:
The older brother of Frank McCourt, author of the memoir, 'Angela's Ashes,' discusses his life as a young Irish man living a dashing life on New York's East Side in the mid-1950s, his subsequent problems with alcohol, and his various international adventures. The voice, tone and humor are meant to sound 'Irish,' but come across as hackneyed and inauthentic in this disappointing memoir.

My Heart Laid Bare
Article Abstract:
The novel attempts to portray America's greed and race relations through the life of a self-righteous con artist, and the lives of his children and a black orphan. The characters are overloaded with symbolism, and seem unreal and abstract.
