The period between Reconstruction and World War I was a nightmare world for southern blacks. Violence and threats of violence were a daily and constant fact of life. Blacks were helpless against the lynching and brutal assaults in this undeclared war.

Stein's writings have been dismissed by some critics, but there have been many more resurrections of her works. Writers today find her work to be provokative and inspirational. For every negative statement there has been a positive view expressed.
