Article Abstract:
Frederick Douglass' literacy was unusual for African-Americans in his day, and unusual for any man of any time. His command of speech, both written and oral, earned him respect and fear from abolitionists and slaveholders alike. The legacy he has left in his writings is a biography of his thought, and will surpass any other biography of his life.
