A financial institution's dilemma: repossessed property
Article Abstract:
Financial institutions increasingly are faced with the problem of repossessing property during the current economic recession. The example of the Harbor View Marina of Garfield Bay on Lake Pend Oreille in Idaho is used to show how one institution dealt with a repossessed property after the developer went into bankruptcy. The financial institution hired a local consulting firm specializing in the marketing of marinas to generate viable options for the property. The financial institution, after studying the viability studies offered by the consulting firm, decided to sell the marina after the year at which a desired level of occupancy was achieved. The case of the marina illustrated the fact that financial institutions need to analyze their investments before making a decision on how to dispose of a repossessed property.

Accounting for Interest Rate Futures in Bank Asset Liability Management
Article Abstract:
The negative impact of accounting regulations on the use of futures in dealing and trading hedges is analyzed. Survey data of banks' deterrence from futures contracts for management of their assets and liabilities is featured. Deferral accounting procedures are promulgated, and the new directions suggested by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) are analyzed. Of the 134 banks surveyed, the greatest number indicated accounting problems were the root of the problem with using futures. In the past few years, more banks have used futures for asset and liability management. This research shows that the attitude against futures in the banking industry is largely undeserved. Tables of gap positions are included.
