A multiserver queueing system with impatient customers
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze a multiserver queueing system with impatient customers, wherein customers arrive based on a Poisson procedure and the service requirements support a general distribution. The approximation accommodates the stationary distribution of the waiting time of a customer in the corresponding queueing system with no impatience. Numerical experiments were carried out to determine the performance of the approximation for queues characterized with a Markovian arrival procedure. A formula was then developed for a single-server queue with general service times and a multiserver queue with exponential services. A solution for the loss probability was determined that was exact for exponential services and an effective heuristic for general service times.

The impact of clustered defect distributions in IC fabrication
Article Abstract:
Research utilizing a Neyman distribution model to design acceptance sampling plans for defects in the manufacture of integrated circuits (IC) indicates the invalidity of the use of the Poisson distribution model. IC manufacturing displays the phenomenon of the clustering of defects due to the high variability of production processes. The Poisson distribution, which is the traditional sampling plan used to model defects in manufacturing, assumes that defects occur uniformly in a material sample. Acceptance sampling based on the Neyman model corrects for the clustering of defects through the use of a larger sample size, thus reducing the possibility of incorrect assumptions that lead to differences between nominal and actual risks.
