The British are coming, and going; many retailers come up short in the Trans-Atlantic leap
Article Abstract:
With a notable exception, British businesses are not very successful in the US. The Virgin Group, starting with an airline and branching into soft drinks, various entertainment stores, music stores and even clothes is a US success story. Others were originally succcessful and then faced troubled times, such as Laura Ashley Holdiongs PLC, and Body Shop International which found it necessary to form a joint venture with Bellamy Retail Group LLC just to stay in business. The reasons for the disappointing performances of UK businesses in the US are diverse, and range from realestate mistakes to Americans' desire for a bargain.

Hip but not haughty at Barney's New York
Article Abstract:
Barney's New York, after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy over two years ago, is making a transition from its past role as a glitzy, yet unprofitable, clothier to that of a traditional, though still upscale, retailer. The company, which plans to come out of bankruptcy later this year, is faced with the dilemma of trying to attract a broader customer base to its national outlets while retaining its core business among the wealthy elites by retraining its clerks to be more accommodating to new customers.
