A systems-management deal that computes
Article Abstract:
BMC Software's early Nov 1998 acquisition of Boole & Babbage unites two venerable systems-management software companies. Analysts praise the move, which consists of a stock swap valued at more than $900 million. Not only do both profitable companies sell complementary products to major corporations and government agencies, they enjoy compatible business cultures. Both companies derive their largest profits from IBM mainframe software sales, although client-server systems now represent a significant market. Their software enables information systems management departments to monitor and troubleshoot, frequently without having to interrupt the system. Boole & Babbage, which started in 1967, offers products that focus on network operation. By contrast software from BMC, founded in 1980, studies data availability and structure in major applications. Most large companies already deploy both companies' products, which also play a key role in migration to electronic commerce and the Internet.
