ADDS Introduces Multi-User System
Article Abstract:
Applied Digital Data Systems (ADDS), a subsidiary of NCR Corp., has added a multi-user system and a single-user micro to its Pick operating system-based Mentor series. The single-user Mentor 1000 operates as either a stand-alone system running CP-M or MS-DOS or as a terminal into ADDS's Mentor host computer. It features Intel 8066 and Zilog Z80A processors, 128K bytes of RAM expandable to 768K bytes, dual 800K byte diskettes or one 10M-byte hard disk with a single diskette, and a monochrome or color display. An introductory version sells for $3,395. The Mentor 2000 supports from eight to thirty-two serial ports and two parallel printer ports. Memory for the Z8000-based 2000 ranges from 256K bytes to 1M byte RAM. Disk storage is available in 15M byte or 26M byte capacities. A system with 512K RAM, a 26M-byte hard disk, uninterruptible power supply, and sixteen serial ports sells for $17,000.

NCR Introduces First Retail PC
Article Abstract:
NCR's new personal retail computer combines the capabilities of an advanced retail management system with a microcomputer in a single package. The system offers an electronically operated cash drawer and point-of-sale and inventory management software. The point-of-sale software provides invoicing or ticketing and detailed sales reporting by salesperson and item. The inventory software can store up to nineteen separate facts about 32,000 items. The system also can run word processing, spreadsheet, general accounting, and data base management software. A configuration including the personal computer with cash drawer, dual 8-16-bit processors, 256K bytes of memory, a flexible and 10M byte Winchester disk drive, operating system, point-of-sale software, and inventory software sells for $7,899.
