AT&T, China set broad pact on phones, gear: firm's role of outsider, tied to 1989 ban, ends; rivals are formidable
Article Abstract:
AT and T and China's State Planning Commission sign a memorandum of understanding that calls for the two entities to explore business activities in building of corporate communications networks and in communications equipment and services. The document contains few details, but officials from both sides say it will allow AT and T to rapidly move into China with such projects as a research laboratory and telephone switch factories. AT and T will face stiff competition from Alcatel-Alsthom SA, Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson, Fujitsu Ltd and NEC Corp. Still, analysts are enthusiastic about the possibility of billions of dollars in contracts for AT and T stemming from the memorandum. AT and T's stock rose 12.5 cents to $54.50 after the memorandum was announced. AT and T was banned from the Chinese phone market on Aug 22, 1989, as part of a Chinese effort to get the US government to relax its trading policies with China.
