AT&T requests local services in two states; plan for Illinois, Michigan aims to create a model, covers Ameritech turf
Article Abstract:
AT&T Corp is planning to offer local telephone service in Illinois and Michigan after being forced to leave the industry in 1994 when the company was broken up. The plan for local services will be the first time that AT&T and one of the regional Bell operating companies fight publicly over the right to offer services. Both sides have been fighting in court to determine limits on which services either industry could offer. AT&T will be fighting to compete in an area where Ameritech Corp already offers local service and would like this service introduction to serve as a model for its entry into the $95 billion nation-wide local service industry. Approval for the services are not expected until late summer 1995 and it is not likely that services will be available until late in 1995.

AT&T to sell phone numbers configured to last a lifetime
Article Abstract:
AT&T has developed a new phone service called EasyReach 700 Service, enabling customers to purchase one phone number that they can use their entire lives. AT&T will start selling the new service in June 1992. Customers will be given a 10-digit phone number with a 700 prefix that will cost $7 per month. The new service sounds a bit like call forwarding, but AT&T says the number a customer gives to friends, family and business associates will never change. Customers can also select the phone calls they want to accept, and they have the option of receiving toll-free calls from the caller. The service is currently limited to the mainland US, and is not available to customers who reside in Alaska or Hawaii.
