What would Murdoch buy with MCI's cash?
Article Abstract:
Observers speculate that News Corp's owner Rupert Murdoch will use the $2 billion to be invested in News Corp by MCI to purchase stakes in a rival media giant such as Time Warner Inc, but others believe that he will use the money to expand News Corp's global reach. MCI will purchase News Corp stock for a 13% ownership stake in the media company. Observers commend Murdoch for pulling off the deal. Murdoch will retain full authority over News Corp with his 40% stake because MCI will have no voting rights under the deal. MCI will give Murdoch access to the company's digital network and other global delivery systems, and the cash will help News Corp's bottom line. Murdoch speculated at a news conference that he may purchase Time Warner's 20% ownership in Turner Broadcasting System Inc. Observers believe that Murdoch may offer to purchase Seagram Co's 15% ownership of Time Warner.

Untangling the debate over cable television
Article Abstract:
Congress is deluged by constituents' complaints over rising cable rates and declining services. Consequently, legislation imposing regulatory restraints is likely. Cable companies seem resigned. Some companies even say moderate legislation might be to their benefit, ending uncertainties that have influenced stock prices and preventing telephone companies from lobbying for permission to compete with cable companies by carrying video programming. Meanwhile, direct broadcast satellite (DBS), programming beamed from satellites to homes equipped with receiving dishes, could emerge as a competitive threat even more significant to cable companies than regulation. In theory, nationwide direct-to-home satellite services could render cable systems obsolete; in practice, there are technological, marketing and distribution problems. What will happen is not yet clear.
