AT&T unveils bold projections for earnings
Article Abstract:
AT&T Corp., in response to investor concerns about its proposed $37.3 billion puchase of Tele-Communications Inc., announced a series of optimistic revenue and earnings projections for the combined company during a teleconference with analysts. AT&T expects earnings of $4.60 a share in 2001 and $5.50 a share in 2002. The company anticipates using the cable network to provide local telephone service and thus enter the $110-billion-a-year local-telephone market now dominated by the Baby Bells and GTE Corp. Before this can happen, however, AT&T will have to spend billions of dollars to outfit homes for telephone calling over TCI's network.

Some wonder if Ciena will keep old business and land AT&T after merger with Tellabs
Article Abstract:
Ciena after merger with Tellabs has caused skepticism among experts as to whether Ciena will ever get a large AT &T contract. Ciena's revenue from its two primary customers may not be as certain as many investors believe. Sprint spokesman, Jeff Chaltas, said that although Sprint had bought approximately $180 million in equipment from Ciena, the company would name another vendor later in 1998. In the meantime, Worldcom, awaiting its merger with MCI, stopped buying equipment from Ciena in February 1998.
