AT&T's Zeglis leads race for CEO post
Article Abstract:
AT&T Vice Chmn John D. Zeglis reportedly is heading the list of candidates to succeed nine-year CEO Robert E. Allen. Zeglis has emerged as a favorite in a narrowed field that includes some outside CEOs, according to insiders. AT&T directors, who began the search in July 1997, are feeling the pressure of an uncertain future. The new CEO will head a telecommunications giant beset by financial and morale problems. AT&T also will face an impending and massive marketing competition from the giant Bell companies in all services. Experience also will play a key role in AT&T's executive decision. Zeglis has received acclaim for his organizational skills, including the longtime confidence of Allen, but has never directed a company. CEO candidates also can present themselves as objective outsiders. AT&T is considering whether to pair Zeglis with a nonexecutive chairman assistant, but fears that Zeglis would resist the offer.

Sprint names LeMay to its no. 2 post, overseeing all of firm's operations
Article Abstract:
Sprint announces the promotion of Ronald T. LeMay to the post of chief operating officer and president, placing one of its chief strategists in charge of the company's entire operations. LeMay will continue to oversee the aggressive Sprint/cable TV company alliance as well as the company's agreements with telecommunications firms in Germany and France. In recent years, Sprint has increased its efforts to break into diverse global markets as well as garner a greater market share in local telephone markets, largely under LeMay's stewardship.
