Accountants: mind your bedside manner
Article Abstract:
Accountants need to develop good communication skills and understand the needs of their listeners if they are going to be successful. When presenting technical information, accountants should remember to: tell management that accounting has done the best job possible; and explain to managers how the information being presented effects their decisions. Accountants should become practiced at: one minute responses to questions from management; five- to ten-minute discussions with management peers; one-hour briefings with staff and controllers; and major presentations for large management audiences. Improved communication skills will allow accountants to respond better in a wide variety of situations and will give them a better understanding of their various audiences.

Using ABC to determine the cost of servicing customers
Article Abstract:
Activity-based costing (ABC) was applied to determine how much customer service was costing a small welding supply company and to identify areas in which cost-cutting was possible. Mahany Welding Supply in Rochester, NY, suspected that certain parts of the company were losing money and were being subsidized by the more profitable departments. ABC principles were applied to historical data to help clarify the problems and possible solutions for management. The analysis revealed 15 different cost-generating activities, including sales, purchasing, collections, auditing, administration, administration, warehousing, order pulling, billing, insurance, and rent and utilities. The findings of the study were used to calculate the target cost figures for the company.
