An analysis of entry and persistence among scientists in an emerging field of science: the case of neural networks

Article Abstract:

Scientists who function as early entrants and remain in a new field act as key catalysts of science and technology. A comparison of early and late entrants in the field of neural networks showed that early scientists showed greater adherence to their original motivations and less compelled by secondary research opinion and funding incentives. Although neural networks are at an infant stage, many firms have integrated them into their operations due to belief in their commercial viability.
