Advanced Micro woos a partner to fight Intel
Article Abstract:
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) acquires NexGen for $860 million in stock in an effort to compete with Intel's domination of the microprocessor market. AMD's rival to Intel's Pentium microprocessor is about six months behind schedule. NexGen, on the other hand, has its own Pentium-class chip, but, with few customers and limited manufacturing capacity, the company's shipments have been limited. AMD's purchase of NexGen was essential since NexGen retains a significant technological lead over AMD. NexGen has shown a working version of a chip that rivals Intel's Pentium Pro chip, but the small company lacks its own production facilities which limits sale capabilities. Intel's 80% hold on the PC microprocessor market makes it unlikely that the AMD and NexGen collaboration will overtake Intel, but achieving the goal of increasing its market share from 17% to 30% may be possible.

Nintendo sues Samsung unit, alleges sale of memory chip to counterfeiters
Article Abstract:
Nintendo of America filed a suit in the US District Court in Seattle, WA, charging South Korea's Samsung Electronics with distributing memory chips to counterfeiters of Nintendo's Donkey Kong Country video game. The suit, which was filed on Jan 17, 1995, alleges that Samsung knowingly supplied cartridge-based chips to counterfeiters of Nintendo systems. Nintendo officials explain that in as much as the chips can only be used in Nintendo and Sega game systems, any other purchaser would by default be a counterfeiter. Samsung officials are denying any knowledge of counterfeiting activity. Nintendo reportedly became aware of the problem when counterfeit copies of Donkey Kong games allegedly began appearing in Latin America, Middle Eastern and Asian countries. Nintendo and Sega Enterprises currently dominate the estimated $10 billion annual global video game market.

Nintendo agrees to acquire 25% stake in Rare to gear up for industry battle
Article Abstract:
Nintendo is planning to purchase a 25% stake in Rare Ltd to build its market share in the competitive computer game industry before an industry war breaks out. Rare is the developer of the video game Donkey Kong Country that is credited with helping Nintendo stop its slide in market share against competitor Sega Enterprises. Rare is also developing a game called Killer Instinct for the Ultra 64 system, which will not be introduced until fall 1995 and will compete with Sega's Saturn system and Sony's Play Station. Analysts say that Nintendo is guaranteeing that Rare does not produce games for any of its competitors to secure its position. The investment in Rare will be the first time Nintendo has invested in a company not located in Japan.
