After buildup, Compaq retreats from networks
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp is backing away from its brief effort to become a computer-network equipment supplier. In 1995, Compaq began acquiring network-equipment companies and in 1996, it organized a Communications Products Group. As recently as 1997, Compaq apparently still saw the high-margin networking business as a natural complement to its low-cost manufacturing and distribution operations. Now, however, the company is phasing out network-equipment manufacturing and eliminating network-related engineering groups. The incident shows how tightly Compaq is aligned with its PC business and how difficult it is for Compaq to translate its computer-related skills into other businesses. A senior VP says networking products will still be made available, but these will appear primarily as adjuncts to computer sales.
