Akers reiterates positive outlook for IBM in period
Article Abstract:
IBM CEO John Akers predicts the company will have a profitable 4th qtr 1991. Akers says the computer manufacturer 'bottomed out' in the summer of 1991 but is improving financially and will have its strongest quarter at the end of the year. IBM's Japanese subsidiary will show improved profit in the second half of 1991, compared to a profit decline in the first half, Akers said. He also said the company could move some assembly to Japan if the US government maintains a recent tariff on Japanese-imported flat panel liquid crystal displays. At Akers' announcements, IBM stock rose $3.25 to $99.875. Stock may also be rising due to rumors about restructuring. An annual meeting of top management that is usually held in Jan has been moved up to the first week of Dec 1991, leading to speculation that Akers has urgent developments to discuss.

AT&T moves to sell part of Unix group: three Japanese companies are said to have agreed to acquire 1%-4% stakes
Article Abstract:
AT and T is reportedly courting computer companies to buy as much as 40 percent of its Unix System Laboratories group. Three Japanese companies, Fujitsu Ltd, NEC Corp, and Toshiba Corp, are among nearly 20 firms interested in buying from 1 percent to 4 percent stakes in the company. The move is a strategic one for AT and T, which is in a standards war over the Unix operating system with another group of companies led by IBM. IBM and others charge that AT and T has too much control over the Unix operating system, and AT and T hopes that by selling off a portion of the company it will gain the support of a broad range of computer companies. IBM and others maintain that even after the sale AT and T will retain absolute control of Unix's future.

Hitachi's mainframes get jump
Article Abstract:
Hitachi Ltd will introduce a mainframe computer in the week of Jun 4, 1990 which will be more powerful than other mainframes that are now on the market. The new machines are expected to help Hitachi in its attempt to become a major player in the US market. Hitachi's US arm, Hitachi Data Systems, has invited reporters and analysts to see the new product on Wed, Jun 6. Industry executives say the Hitachi machines are the first of a new generation of mainframes that Hitachi, IBM and Amdahl Corp will announce over the next few quarters. IBM controls about 80 percent of the IBM-compatible mainframe market, and although Hitachi is expected to make a major marketing effort in both Japan and the US, it will not threaten IBM's dominance.
