All at sea on a voyage through the daunting world of physics
Article Abstract:
HarperCollins Interactive's $50 The Cartoon Guide to Physics CD-ROM's strength is its entertainment value, but it also offers good information on the topic. Users begin by choosing between the four modules, including Lucy's World, the Hall of Fame, the Workshop and the Glossary. Lucy's World contains a pyramid with 11 topics, and it illustrates laws of physics with cartoons, but it fails to provide explanations. Workshop offers five topics, and animations that illustrate user-controlled concepts and the effects when users change the variables in the equations that govern the action. Explanations accompany the equations. The Hall of Fame is organized around well-known figures, whose contributions are outlined. Icons permit users to discover the Time Line and Ideas associated with the Hall of Fame member. The Glossary is organized around the topics used in the modules, but alphabetical searches are also possible.

The life and death of internal batteries
Article Abstract:
Power management products, such as International Systems Inc's Batterydisk, allow users to preserve key information when a PC battery dies. When a PC battery dies, important settings that provide CMOS settings information on the computer's hard drive, memory and other essential information may be lost. Re-entering these settings can be a painstaking and tedious task. Batterydisk can restore these CMOS settings when the battery fails. Users simply insert Batterydisk into the floppy drive of their 286, 386,486 or Pentium PC and it records the CMOS settings. When the battery fails, simply insert the disk in the A drive and the settings will be restored. Batterydisk is available directly from International Systems for $19.95.

Finding a winner among 100 oddball notions
Article Abstract:
Mindlink's $200 Mindlink Problem Solver decision support software helps users brainstorm. Six modules help users generate and combine ideas to find creative solutions. The Idea Generator module prompts users to enter basic information about the problem to be solved, then to enter ridiculous, but related ideas or stories. The program returns three words that the user is to combine in an outline or a paragraph. Other modules include a GYM, which leads users through a series of exercises, a tutorial module and a problem-solving module. A database stores ideas to be used at a later time. The program comes with outstanding documentation and screen design is straightforward and well laid out.
